First, it goes without saying that none of this would have been possible without God! ✝️🇻🇦Now, I am thrilled to share that I will be pursuing my legal education at the University of Miami School of Law starting Fall 2024, having received the esteemed Dean’s Merit Scholarship. I will soon be a “Double Cane.” After having been a first generation college student I can now add “first in my family to attend law school!”My passion for law, which was cultivated very young, has propelled me towards a future where I aspire to shape a legacy and impact lives through legal advocacy. I have been inspired throughout my lifetime by the impactful and profound journeys of legal pioneers and luminaries. How did I become a Partner in Biglaw at 31?It's a trick question that you can't figure out without some background. The math doesn't math, as some would say.I started dual enrollment (taking college classes for high school credit) early on in high school. At the beginning of my "Junior" year, we sat down with my counselor and realized I was going to be out of credits soon. So that year became my Senior year, and I graduated a year early at age 16.When I graduated from high school, I also graduated with my Associate's degree through dual enrollment. I started at FSU the next fall at age 17 as a Junior (by credit). To maximize my time at FSU, I double majored in Finance and International Affairs. After 3 years, I graduated from college at 19.I started law school the next fall at age 20. Three years later, I graduated law school (no shortcuts there) at 23. I was admitted to The Florida Bar in September 2016. Now, I'm in my 8th year of practice.Over the years, I've had several people question my abilities because of my age. But age is just a number. Just because someone is younger than you doesn't mean they're less capable. The metric, instead, should be hard work and competence.#litigation #lawschool #lawpractice

I am happy to share that last weekend, I graduated from Loyola University Chicago School of Law with my JD. Reflecting on the past three years, I have learned the importance of community and collective activism over individuality and lone success. I can say with absolute certainty that I would not have accomplished what I have academically, professionally, or personally without the endless support from my family, friends, and mentors. I am excited to embark on this new chapter in my legal career, but first: the Bar exam!

Mishan is passionate about justice and committed to giving voice to the voiceless. Mishan also served as the Editor-in-Chief for the Virginia Journal of International Law. As she donned her cap and gown, I reflected on the remarkable journey that brought her here.Academic Excellence and Resilience throughout the formal education at Plano ISD, UT McCombs, and UVA. I recently wrote an article that has been published on Villanova University's platform, Career Connections, addressing tips and tricks for students who are considering law school. If you are considering law school after undergrad, here's some things to think about based on my experience as I go through the process myself! I'd like to thank Alexandra Karlesses, M.S. for the opportunity to share my advice on this platform!

"I think I'm going to quit Dad. It's just too much, I'm pretty sure I have a job lined up anyways." My daughter's words after her 1st semester at Law school.I listened to her and said "You have only been at Law School 4 months. It takes time to adapt to the work load. You are not the only one going through this. Why don't you stick it out until the end of the year? After all, you earned a scholarship, your fees are paid. See what happens, you can always get a job but not an opportunity like this."She went back for the 2nd semester....andCompleted her Law degree, Top of her class.Class Valedictorian.Passed her bar exam on first try.Is being Called to the bar Summer 2025.Most importantly, the President of the Law School said she "set the tone" for her class by helping others, sharing notes, explaining difficult subjects and was open to help anyone as long as they helped themselves in the process. She did the work but I was most proud she S.H.P.C. so everyone got better.Moral: Stick it out during hard times. Give "it" a chance on a time line you choose. Try and see the big, long term picture. Help yourself by unselfishly helping others. It will reinforce your own good habits and build a team to be there to help you when needed. S.H.P.C. You know this....Just take action and do it.

En route to Yale Law School! Tomorrow, I’ll speak with YLW+ and Title IX Student Advocates about The Legal Accountability Project’s transformative #clerkship transparency work! And, I look forward to meeting LAP intern Evelyn Letona-Robles (Yale University ‘25) in real life! We’ll discuss the right questions to ask (of yourself and others) before #clerking; challenges clerks might face and resources available; the importance of being mindful of who you clerk for; and, of course, how to access the candid info you need before applying! At a #lawschool where #clerkships are top of mind for many, nothing is more important than empowering students to be informed and discerning consumers of clerkship opportunities.LAP events also inspire broader student #advocacy, encouraging students to demand better for themselves and their peers than the broken status quo. Beyond that, I hope that this year, no law student will accept a “challenging” clerkship for the prestige, nor unwittingly enter an unsafe work environment because they lack information about judges, as I did. Thanks to LAP’s Centralized Clerkships Database, no one will have to! We *can* accomplish this ambitious goal *this year,* and it starts with conversations like these. #clerkships #courts #judiciary #transparency #lawschools #lawschoolroadshow

A few days ago, I officially received my juris doctorate with honors after completing my evening law program at American University Washington College of Law. I say “evening” rather than “part-time” because completing an evening JD program in four years means assuming a nearly full-time course load (eleven credits per semester instead of twelve), balancing a full-time career, and squeezing what minutes remain for everything else. It was quite the journey. Someone told me once -as I was considering law school and worried that I’d be forty by the time I graduated- that I’d be forty anyway; I’d just be forty with or without a law degree. How true these words turned out to be, not only for the fact of the matter asserted but as evidence that time waits for no one.If I’ve learned anything in my program (besides all the legal skills. See “with honors,” supra.), it’s the value of time. Time doesn’t wait. Even in those moments when work and school and life compressed, and everything seemed to happen at once, and I really, really wished I could pause it for just a few hours, time didn’t wait. After each semester, I’d visit the store, marvel at all the new products, and examine movie posters and books as though I were an extraterrestrial on my first visit to Earth.I missed things, important things. Because the time I dedicated to this program wasn’t solely my own. It was as much the time of my family, loved ones, and friends. For that, this accomplishment is as much Joya Patel, MPH's as mine. Thank you, Joya; I wouldn’t have made it through the first minute of this journey without you.Thank you also to Professor Danielle Vogel at the Veloric Center for Entrepreneurship. I’m so lucky that I found myself taking your food systems course and grateful that you seemed to reach out whenever I needed a new perspective.Four years ago, I entered law school in my 30s. A few days ago, I celebrated my 40th birthday. And here I am with a law degree. Helluva thing, time. Helluva thing. #lawschool #graduation
